More than 40 recreational and
competitive kayakers and Waka paddlers from all over Otago
braved the strong northerly wind to race in the first of the
Dunedin winter kayak series races.
Breaking waves on the main harbour forced the course to be
changed to a 2.5km loop
in the sheltered harbour basin.
Local paddler
Daniel Peacock had a boat length lead by the first buoy.
He was chased hard by Philip Pirie both racing K1s for the newly
formed
Otago University Kayak Racing Club.
Daniel pulled
away during the race eventually winning comfortably in 53.31
mins and
taking first place in the Otago 10 km championship.
James Coombes from St Clair Surf lifesaving, also paddling a K1
made a late charge
to finish third just 20 seconds behind Philip Pirie in 55.58
mins.
In the Open women, Carla Laughton from St Clair Surf lifesaving
was a clear winner
in a time of 59.50 minutes, placing fifth overall ahead of many
male competitors.
Second place went to Nicole Walker from Otago University Kayak
Club.
Sophie Robb was the fastest under 18 female paddler and also
took third place
in the open women Otago 10 km championship.
Cameron Burrows was the fastest junior male.
This is his first season racing kayaks and he handled the
difficult conditions well.
The blustery wind
and waves were ideal conditions for the recreational sea
kayakers
but more taxing for the less experienced paddlers.
Two kayakers took an unplanned swim and in the true spirit of
kayaking
other competitors went to their assistance and provided support.
