Polo Finals 2000

The finals were great ! I was unsure as to what the night would turn out like, as the whole season seemed to be beset with hiccups; with gear breakages, venue closure and flat balls. The latter of course just needed a bit of puff from someone other than me ....... I had run out of it after screaming, swearing and generally wanting to drown a couple of the more spirited members of the polo group.

Well the balls did get pumped up, the goals held, Water Polo gave up their Sunday night deep-end slot so we could play and heaps of supporters arrived to cheer for the six teams in the C, B, and A grade final matches. And they were terrific -

C grades No Flys on Us ( my choice of name I`m afraid, inspired by another entry calling themselves Maggot`s Mob) and Bro Wave fronted for their final match; the former had been unbeated throughout the season and was the team picked to win. I had watched Bro Wave steadily improve over the season so expected that the match would not be such a walkover. And it was`nt  -  the young team from the surf club, all I think under fifteen years, played superbly.
( I was told soome of the parents had promised a treat / reward if they won, not dreaming they could pull it off.)
Third grade final ?
Is this a C grade Pic ?? : )
Both  outstanding individual effort and excellent teamwork saw Bro Wave succeed with a well earned win.
.
B grade; yet another surf club team, this time the older teenagers Liquid Thunder, played off against the reigning champions Electric Sausage Dogs ( what does this name signify ? ).

Again a good match and at one stage I thought there would be an upset, but no. The Dogs got a grip and took control to win the match
......
A grade; after playing against and watching these teams all season I knew this would be a good match. Mabey a little fiesty, but all in all, in control .......  So with a lot of anticipation and some trepidation I took an onside interest in the course of events with a whistle in my hand, my heart pounding, with Adam Norrie cool and collected on the other side of the pool to referee. The Game was between The Bay, a very strong varsity team and Old Bastards.
Old bastards - what delusions of grandeur. Okay these guys are past puberty, but nowhere near the male menopause, unless of course that occurs at the age of thirty. Where do I place if they`re old ?
The fossils were picked to win, but in the first quarter The Bay scored first, quickly followed by an equalizer. Each team matched goal for goal for a while and it was only in the latter part of the game that the Old Bastards finally got their act together to win by a small margin.

Why haven`t I mentioned the scores ? Of course I can`t find  the scoresheet. Obvious really it`s somewhere and for those who know  Dave and my lifestyle will know that someday in our topsy turvey house it will surface but I just can`t lay my hands on it right now.
.
Presentation night saw more people than I had catered for. Wonderful turn out, but the waiters / waitresses began to ask me to distribute the food as apparently there was a distinct likeness to seagulls at the beach -  conjures up memories of Hitchcock`s film Birds. R&R once again generously supplied us with spot prizes which much to my disgust I was not a recipient of !

Thanks for a memorable season - Robyn Hutchinson
