Taieri by Train

A small group had a great day on the Taieri River in September 2002. We jumped on the Taieri Gorge train at the Taioma Rail crossing for the thiry minute senic trip to Hindon. All the train staff were so helpful and went out of their way to assist us.
We put in above the Hindon Rapid at 2:00 pm.
A good opportunity to test your river reading skills.
All the rapids had enough water to make it well worth it with the flow at 25 to 30 cumecs. Plenty of surf and play spots.
Two hours of playing down to Mt Allen then a one hour senic, historic, flat water run (mind the willows) to the Taioma take out. An easy grade 2 trip.
The last time we paddled this section we rejoined the train at Mt Allen and felt pressure not to miss our transport home. This time was more relaxed and the extra hour was good for the fit ones.
I am already scanning the Taieri Gorge timetable for the next opportunity.
